The BMW i4 may look like the Gran Coupé 4 Series, but it has been reinvented and redesigned with electric motors instead of gasoline engines. The i4 is a powerful electric vehicle trapped in the legacy body of a sports sedan with a combustion engine of the 3 or 4 series. The handling of the BMW i4 is difficult to beat. The Mercedes-AMG EQS is a stellar electric sedan with a 277-mile range that sets the benchmark for other luxury car manufacturers looking to create a powerful, quiet and luxurious battery-powered sedan.
It offers cutting-edge technology with 56-inch hyperscreen and powerful performance in a relatively attractive package. Electric cars are reaching the masses, with the introduction of inexpensive electric vehicles from brands such as Renault and Volkswagen just around the corner. At the same time, there are now more and more electrical options for the discerning luxury car buyer than before, where the Tesla Model S once existed and little else. Mercedes has a long history of luxury cars, with its S-Class limousine setting benchmarks for half a century.
But instead of putting some batteries in the latest version, Mercedes started with a clean sheet designing the EQS to make way for the zero-emission era. When it comes to interior quality and on-board technology, it doesn't disappoint, especially when equipped with the 1.41-meter-wide 'Hyperscreen'. Surprisingly, driving comfort is not at the same level as the S-Class, but the car has an impressive range of up to 450 miles. Prices start from £100,000 and there's a high-performance AMG version.

The Model X is Tesla's luxurious sports SUV, but under the sci-fi style is a very practical and spacious car, with up to seven seats and luggage compartments front and rear. However, despite its size and weight (2,300 kg), it works like a rocket. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h lasts only 2.5 seconds on the Plaid version, which also has a range of 340 miles.
Meanwhile, the Long Range can cover 360 miles and can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. The e-tron was Audi's first electrically produced car, and if it sounds familiar to you, it's because it's closely based on the existing Q5 and Q7 SUVs.
On the road, it's extremely refined, if not the best-handling electric SUV, though the cab makes up for that shortcoming. Power comes from electric motors on the front and rear axles, providing four-wheel drive and 302 bhp, which rises to 402 bhp if you use the boost function that provides eight-second acceleration. This results in a 0-100 km/h time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of around 125 mph. The e-tron is capable of charging 150 kW and has a range of 248 miles.

This is where the Teslas fight the Mercedes EQ, the BMW i, the Audi e-Trons and even the new Porsches. If you have a larger budget to spend on a family car with an electric motor to use and rely on for any type of trip, then with claimed ranges of up to 400 miles or more, these are your main competitors.
However, Munich is no stranger to exterior design that defies convention; and it has emphasized all the nerves to turn it into a flagship electric car, as well as a decisive moment in its transformation from a manufacturer of internal combustion cars to a brand that is dedicated almost exclusively to zero models emissions. The iX is about the size of an X5, but is based on a specialized platform adapted with lightweight composites and mixed metals, and is powered by an electric motor per shaft. Is this 751bhp all-electric Taycan Turbo S a true Porsche sports car, as its manufacturer claims? The Taycan is a world-class operator, no matter how you configure it, but the expanded cargo space and additional versatility of the Cross Turismo version, which increases driving height, don't seem to have weakened the car's dynamic powers. This car moves with incredibly absorbing and balanced body control, yet retains communicative and talkative steering, fine driving response, ideal balance and driving safety, and as much real pace as you could expect to deploy on the road.
The electric range is not a class leader, but 250 miles are possible from most versions of the mixed-use car in the real world. Most notable is the way the EQS glides through the air, taking full advantage of its massive 120 kWh battery and helping it reach 400 miles in the real world. Four-wheel steering helps this 5.2-meter-long car turn like a black cab, while the air suspension ensures high standards of insulation, comfort and refinement. The Mercedes EQS is an incredibly complete car, one that proves that the automotive industry's oldest powerhouse has found its feet in the electric car market and eventually returned the service of disruptive brands with interest.
With a size that fits between the company's existing Q5 and Q7 models, but offers an interior space that competes with the latter, the e-Tron is powered by a separate electric motor per axle and develops 402 bhp and 487 lb ft of torque in the “boost” drive mode. A Jaguar I-Pace is smaller, lighter, lighter and faster, but the e-Tron outperforms its close British rival in total battery capacity, offering 95 kWh of storage, which is good for a supposed 249-mile WLTP combined range. In daily use, expect to see between 210 and 220 miles before the battery runs out. Therefore, the strengths of the normal e-Tron make it a magnificent luxury car, although it does not have as much driver appeal as certain rivals.
Audi's solution to this has been to launch the 496 bhp e-Tron S Sportback, whose sensationally versatile rear axle drive unit gives it a degree of maneuverability, fit and involvement beyond the basic e-TRON. At nearly £90,000, it's pricey, but potentially worth it for the pace, style and novelty factor of safely shipping an electric SUV sideways on a whim. The EQE uses a shortened version of the EQS EVA2 platform, which means there's no room for the same gigantic batteries, but 90 kWh of usable capacity is still an impressive number and means that the EQE 350+ has a quoted range of 394 miles. In the UK, we will have the four-wheel drive dual-engine EQE 300, EQE 350+ and AMG EQE 53 versions (the highest and lowest will arrive a little later than the Mid-Ranger), while other markets will also get the four-wheel drive versions EQE 500 and AMG EQE 43.Sharing its platform with the related GLC, the EQC has two electric motors, four-wheel drive with torque vectorization and combined peak outputs of 402 bhp and 564 lb ft.
The WLTP verified battery range is officially 259 miles, and our tests suggest that between 80% and 90% of that range is reproducible in mixed driving in the real world. That's not so much the cruising range as longer EVs, but it's a competitive show anyway. The EQC has many driving modes and there is a lot of complexity to deal with when configuring its numerous battery regeneration settings and semi-autonomous driver assistance systems to your liking. But if you overcome that obstacle, you'll find the car to be very drivable and rounded at its best, as well as as elegant and luxurious as you'd want a £70,000 family car to be.
BMW has changed course in its electrification strategy. Having conceived the i brand to contain its first EV and plug-in hybrid, it is now extending electric cars among its wider model range, and the iX3 was the first of its next-generation electric vehicles to hit the streets. It is also the first car BMW produces in China for export markets. With a rear-mounted engine delivering up to 282 bhp, and with a 74 kWh battery capacity for a declared maximum WLTP range of 285 miles, the iX3 isn't as fast or as long as some of its rivals; and priced at £62,000, it's not cheap either.
But its asset can prove to be the DC fast charging potential of up to 350 kW as an option, which can restore an empty battery to 80% in just over half an hour if a compatible charger is available. Model X is the largest in Tesla's model army and the only seven-seater. Despite weighing more than 2.5 tons, it is still a car capable of delivering surprising performance, although its range suffers a little as a result of its volume. Designed for city driving, the RX may not be the fastest luxury electric car, but it definitely lives up to the most versatile.
This luxury car offers a ton of technological features, synonymous with the Tesla brand, and a minimalist interior with a giant information and entertainment screen. Rival cars, such as the Porsche Taycan and the Mercedes-Benz EQS, offer cabins that are more in line with traditional ideas of luxury. When you're looking for a top-notch electric car, and most importantly, the car that's right for you, your preferred aesthetic, and your unique lifestyle, there are a lot of considerations you need to keep in mind. Even if it doesn't break down barriers in terms of absolute electric range in the way some expect from a top-tier EV, the BMW iX has a compelling aptitude for purpose and a true integrity of appeal as a nearly £100,000 luxury car.
There are car brands that are breaking into the electric vehicle market and then there are those that are one step ahead, such as Fisker, a car brand based on environment and sustainability. Quiet, spacious and luxuriously comfortable, it is a car that you will like best on long trips, knowing that you can travel long distances without squeezing. The I-Pace, the first luxury electric car from a conventional manufacturer that directly challenges Tesla in the high-end market, meets its requirements with outstanding driving dynamics, first-class interior quality and a striking design that is a bit more of an SUV than a saloon, but is both attractive and innovative . Startups like Rivian and Lucid are also adapting their cars for luxury rather than mass market.
The Mercedes is comfortable, but the insulation and sophistication of driving the iX are really very special and make it a particularly attractive luxury car. But the list of all-electric sedans and luxury sports cars is impressive, with some of the best ranges and performance in all electric vehicles. It is a sign of the maturity of electric car technology that there is now a rapidly growing market for premium brand luxury electric vehicles. The Tesla Model S has existed for quite a few years, but it is still the luxury electric car that all brands are looking for.
